One of a kind trophy up for grabs at Lakeland Motor Museum’s ‘Drive & Ride In Day’

Owners of classic cars and motorbikes are being invited to bring their vehicles along to one of the north’s leading heritage attractions this December, for the Lakeland Motor Museum’s Boxing Day ‘Drive & Ride In Day’ gathering.
Based on previous attendance, up to 150 vehicles are expected to attend throughout the day at Backbarrow on Thursday December 26, where drivers will be able to show off their pride and joy alongside many more vehicles.
The event, which is held three times a year, regularly attracts an impressive array of cars and motorcycles, with a special trophy – created on-site using a Hohm vintage cutaway engine to be awarded to the owner of the vehicle judged to be “the most interesting or unique”.
Furness man Peter Walker was declared the winner of the event in Boxing Day last year, for his American 1939 Ford 85 Bullnose ¾ tonne truck. Mr Walker was able to keep the trophy for 12 months, before returning it to the museum to be handed over to this year’s winner.
The Lakeland Motor Museum’s Operations Manager Chris Lowe says, “Until just before the end of last year, we’d always handed out pretty traditional trophies, so I was inspired to create one of our own that nobody else will have. We’ve had this old Hohm engine sat on a shelf for the best part of 20 years and never quite knew what to do with it. Originally used in a technical college, it just needed a thorough clean and mounting on a wooden plinth. It came out looking fantastic and I’ve even made sure all the moving parts still work too, so it’s a trophy to play with as well as admire!
“Days like the one we have planned are absolutely perfect for both enthusiasts and the more casual admirer of classic and interesting looking vehicles. We hope our car park here at the Lakeland Motor Museum will once again be transformed into something very special this Christmas.”
An open invitation has been issued to classic vehicle owners, with no need to book a slot – just turn up and park for free.
Indoors, the museum’s extensive collection of cars, motorbikes and artefacts will also be on display, with owners of the classic vehicles participating in the Drive & Ride In Day event offered a discount on entry to the museum, which is home to a unique collection of 30,000 exhibits, including well over 150 classic cars and motorbikes.
