Historic Vehicle Community Consulted on Apprenticeship Proposals

Published: 25/03/2014

The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC) has today (25 March 2014) published the draft framework of its proposed new modern apprenticeship in historic vehicle restoration. The framework has been compiled in conjunction with the Institute of the Motor Industry and has been supervised by an expert steering group made up of established vehicle restorers, educationalists and historic vehicle experts.

The development of this iimportant training initiative was inspired following research by the FBHVC which demonstrated a growing industry in vehicle restoration with an ageing workforce. With no established qualifications in this area there was obviously a need to establish a pathway for young engineers to replace the craftsmen approaching retirement.

The aim is to have courses running from the commencement of the next academic year. Following this consultation, the framework will be submitted to OFQUAL for formal accreditation and it is hoped that this can be acieved by May. If granted this will release funding so that students will be able to enroll with the colleges adopting the course and have their tuition fees fully paid.

Commenting on the launch of the consultation, FBHVC Trade and Skills Director, Karl Carter said, " This is a very significant milestone in this important project. I urge anyone with an interest in historic vehicles to study the draft framework and give any feedback."

Mr Carter also paid tribute to the contribution of the restoration industry which in a genuine team effort had given their time and expertise to make such rapid progress to this stage. In particular he thanked, Bicester Heritage, McGrath Maserati and the MG Car Club who had provided the funding for the development of the draft framework and much encouragement.
