D I D Reports 2012

We would be pleased to receive reports and no more than two photos from this year’s Drive It Day on Sunday 22nd April which can then be published here.

Please send brief details and 2 photos to the FBHVC Secretary

The Federation were represented at Bishopstone near Swindon and a new venue this year, the Ace Cafe on London’s North Circular Road. The Royal Oak at Bishopstone had a delightful mix of regular attendees and many new faces with some wonderful and rare machinery such as the DKW van, unique in this country and complete with a matching motorcycle in the back.

The oldest vehicle was a 1912 FN, just two months away from celebrating 100 years on the road. Well over 100 bikes and cars, and their owners, enjoyed the great atmosphere and superb food and drink at this Wiltshire pub, where the landlord, Tim Finney, is an enthusiastic supporter of our movement.

Next year’s Drive It Day will be Sunday 21st April 2013

From the Clubs…….

The Den, Teignmouth was the venue for the Crash Box & Classic Car Club’s annual Drive It Day event. Our friends from the Torbay Old Wheels Club joined us before setting out on a car run. Apart from a couple of short, sharp showers the weather was kind, if a little breezy.
Once again Cornwall Austin Seven Club invited ATDC and VAR members in Cornwall to support DiD with Club members who also own pre-war Austins. Cars from four start points met at Trelawney Garden Centre, Wadebridge, for an hours break and attracted a lot of interest.
Photograph of members of the South of Scotland Veteran and Vintage Vehicle Club’s participation in the National Drive It Day on our trip south of the border to the Houghton Garden Centre near Carlisle.
The Karmann Ghia Owners Club (South East Area) invited Marden Motor Club and TIPEC (London & SE) to join them for Drive it Day. Twenty five cars, their owners and passengers met at Orchard View Classics Garage, Yalding, for doughnuts and coffee.
Gairoch Vehicle Restoration Society
The Gairoch Vehicle Restoration Society Drive it Day Run was held on 22 April. We met at the Beach in Aberdeen. The hoods soon went up. We went through the centre of Aberdeen to the Royal Deeside Railway Preservation site at Crathes for a coffee stop and the rain eased up. We had 51 cars taking part.
Bromsgrove & District MGOC
Bromsgrove & District MGOC had 24 cars turn up for the drive with only 1 car getting lost, although they did say that they didn’t get lost, they just took a different route and included a coffee break with cakes, but stil made it to the finish line, The Blue Bell pub We had cars from the Bromsgrove & District MGOC, the Worcester MGOC and all the non MG’s in the photos were individual entrants that contacted us via the information given out by the FBHVC.
East Anglian Practical Classics Club
22 assorted historic vehicles from the East Anglian Practical Classics Club, ranging from a 1920s Model A Ford Coupe to an early eighties Matra Murena, met up at Parham for a visit to the USAAF 390th Bomb Group Museum, before departing for a short scenic run to the lunch venue at The Chequers, in Ketteburgh.
Drive it Day was rather damp at Crich Tramway Village, (Matlock Derbys DE4 5DP), but quite a few classic cars came along to park in Tramway Street beside the passing trams.
Vauxhall Motors’ unique heritage collection, the largest single collection of Vauxhall cars in the world, was on display for all to see on Sunday April 22 as part of the Drive it Day celebrations, and Kelvin Hopkins MP, vice chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Historic Vehicles Group was there to support the event with his son, Danny Hopkins, who also happens to edit Practical Classics magazine.

Vauxhall press officer Veronica Borrelli Painter is pictured handing over the keys to the collection’s, Luton built, 1975 Vauxhall Victor FE 2300S to Danny Hopkins as Kelvin and heritage centre stalwarts Andy and Terry look on

Bexhill 100 Motoring Club
Around 15 cars from the Bexhill 100 Motoring Club met at the Ravenside Retail Park at Bexhill for a 20 mile run around the Sussex countryside to a stop at the Waterside Cafe at the Hawkhurst fish farm. Here about 35 members sat down to breakfasts, Sunday lunches or just cakes swilled down with a refreshing hot tea or coffee
Cavalier & Chevette Club
The Newsletter Editor of the Cavalier and Chevette Club visited the Steam Gala (in her Cavalier, of course!) at the Llangollen Railway on Drive it Day and saw this Green Goddess still working for its living, pumping water from the River Dee to thirsty steam engines like the small Road Roller pictured.
96 cars turned up for the Hagerty event which started at Silverstone Racing Club with blue skies and sunshine. The cars then took an 82 mile scenic cross country route finishing at Donington Park and a tour of the Kevin Wheatcroft Donington Grand Prix collection.

A great day was had by all and £2,160 raised for charity in the process.

Despite threatening clouds a trip round Banbury found us at a very good pub for lunch while my 1920 Citroen and Colin Thomas’s 1924 Wolseley commiserate in the car park

Pictures of the Forest of Dean Historic Vehicle Club’s Chairman’s Run to Berrington Hall on Drive It Day. Twenty-five cars met at Ross on Wye and lunch was taken at The Royal Oak Broadwas [Worcester].

We then moved on to Berrington Hall [Leominster] in the afternoon before returning to the Forest of Dean. Great mix of club cars (1911-1970) and the weather was much better than expected.

Photos of the South West Section of the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club when we had 19 cars gathered in the rain at the Two Bridges Hotel on Dartmoor.
The Chiltern Region of the Morris Register
The Chiltern Region of the Morris Register arranged A Drive it Day event at Cliveden ( National Trust). We had 29 cars on parade, 16 Morris’s, 1 Wolseley, 2 M.G’s 1 Daimler Dart and 9 Austins from the local Austin Club.

You will see from the photos that this event really attracted the crowds as it was “open day” day at Cliveden, people were around the cars all the time.

The Cavalier and Chevette Club Scottish Highlands representative took a mix of local classics out for Drive It Day.

The run started at Kingussie, and we drove to Ardverikie Castle (“Glenbogle Castle” of Monarch of the Glen fame), where Ardverikie Estate were kind enough to give us permission to drive up to the Castle for a photoshoot. Some of the cars had actually been used in the filming of Monarch of the Glen.

The Kennet Valley Group (KVG) met at Dylans Tea Room at Lytchett Minster to join the Bournemouth & Poole Preservation Group on their run through the Purbecks.

After the run they returned to Dylans for a cream tea and closer inspection of the cars. KVG member Michael Field won the plaque for the best car on the day.
