More reports and photos from this year’s Drive It Day Event
The Chiltern Region of the Morris Register arranged a visit to The de Havilland Aircraft Heritage Centre at London Colney, Hertfordshire. We had 24 cars on Parade which made an excellent sight in the Car Park. We were blessed with excellent weather.
The Scottish Military Vehicle Group held four separate Drive it Day runs in various locations across Scotland. In glorious spring sunshine, vintage military vehicles could be seen out in manoeuvres in Perthshire, Aberdeenshire, the West Coast and Edinburgh areas.
To recognise Drive It Day, Stan Allison & Greg Knight, together with a group of friends from various clubs, gathered together for a 33 mile run around East Yorkshire.
A glorious day, with nine cars spanning five decades, culminated with a carvery lunch at The Broadlands near Bridlington.
25 Vintage & Classic cars from the Borders Vintage Automobile Club took part in “Drive It Day” this year. From Galashiels in the Scottish Borders, we headed out in beautiful spring sunshine and met up with fellow club members and their cars for a photo opportunity at Scotts View above Melrose ( 181 metres above sea level) before travelling on towards a welcome coffee stop at Earlston.
Rover Enthusiasts South West
We organised this years Drive it Day event to go from Bodmin to Land’s End. The weather was perfect and our merry convoy consisted of a Rover P5b coupe, Rover P6 2000, Rover P6 3500S, Rover SD1 Vittesse, Rover 820e, Rover 820Si, Rover 75 and a late Austin Metro – so a great selection of Rover vehicles produced in every decade from the 60′s onwards. We had a lovely lunch at The Yacht Inn, Penzance.
Starting from various points in East Suffolk, 24 vehicles from the East Anglian Practical Classics Club headed for the nostalgic museum in the Control Tower at Rougham, formerly known as Bury Field, the home of the Flying Fortresses of the USAAF 94th Bomb Group. Here, they were joined by 3 examples of the Naylor TF1700, all stalwart supporters of Drive it Day since its inception.
After an interesting visit, most of the attendees retired to the nearby hostelry, not surprisingly called “The Flying Fortress”, for a splendid carvery lunch.
The Bexhill 100 Motoring Club once again took part in Drive it day. The club joined forces with the local Austin A30/35 club and in total had 31 cars taking a 60 miles round trip from Bexhill on Sea (Birthplace of British Motor Racing in 1902) across the county to Bolebrook Castle near Tunbridge Wells.
The cars included the clubs own Austin A35 Van along with several Daimler Darts, a Lanchester, a frog eyed Sprite, a Morris Ten Series M and a 1962 Morris Mini that has spent all it’s life in Bexhill. The day proved uneventful with no breakdowns or problems. The sun shone and it was nice to get so many waves from other classic car drivers doing their own thing on such a wonderful day.
The Karmann Ghia Owners’ Club, SE region, met with 2 other clubs at the Spa Valley Railway Tunbridge Wells, and took a county drive to Herstmonceux Castle and Science Centre, finishing the day with a pub meal. About 20 cars took part.
The 1100 Club Fun Run
On Drive It Day 2011 the Surrey branch of the 1100 Club hosted their second annual Drive It Day Fun Run. This year a total of fourteen cars were on display at our base, Painshill Park in Cobham.
We were pleased to welcome cars from other clubs, including several from the Surrey branch of the Rover P4 club and also an Austin A40 and Wolseley 15/50.
The Highland Area Organiser of the Cavalier & Chevette Club took their one-family-from-new Cavalier Mk.1 out on Drive It Day, in company with this immaculate Mercedes Convertible, for a tour around the Cairngorms. The Drive It Day flag was thus flown in style in the Highlands of Scotland on a beautiful sunny day
On a sunny day in April, a selection of Armstrong Siddeleys enjoyed a very interesting visit to see this magnificent ship that now resides in the same dry dock in Bristol in which it was born some 168 years ago.
We had our own special parking spot at the dock side adjacent to the ship and museum and the cars attracted many favourable comments from visitors. This sort of venue is ideal for a Club outing where large numbers of people see the cars
